Edwards was born in East Windsor, Connecticut, the son of a minister. He graduated from Yale College in 1720, and then served as a pastor in Northampton, Massachusetts, from 1729 to 1750. During his time in Northampton, Edwards experienced a profound religious awakening, which led him to develop his own unique brand of Calvinist theology.
In 1750, Edwards was dismissed from his pastorate in Northampton due to his controversial views on the nature of salvation. He then served as a missionary to the Native Americans in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, and as president of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) from 1758 until his death in 1758.
Edwards' philosophical work is marked by its attempt to reconcile the claims of reason and faith. He argued that reason is a gift from God, and that it should be used to understand the world and to glorify God. However, he also believed that reason is limited, and that it cannot fully comprehend the mysteries of faith.
Edwards' theological work is characterized by its emphasis on the sovereignty of God and the depravity of man. He argued that God is the ultimate cause of all things, and that his will is irresistible. He also believed that man is totally depraved, and that he is unable to save himself from sin.
Edwards' work has had a profound impact on American thought. His philosophical insights have helped to shape the American understanding of the nature of reality, the human condition, and the relationship between God and man. His theological work has helped to define the American understanding of the Christian faith.
